Exhibition of Borys Makary

May 21 – July 21, 2014
Exhibition opening: May 21, 7 p.m.

The artist, continuing his adventure with fashion photography, goes in the direction of conceptual, creative photography, being a commentary to the surrounding reality. In the foreground of his projects there is an interest in human nature, especially the changeability and corporeality of women. In his works he tries to capture and define what femininity and sensuality are. He is constantly looking for interesting and innovative methods of depiction, trying not only to make them diverse and conceptual, but also to reveal the mysterious nature of man to the viewer through them.

The experimental project “They were” boils down in its form to a man-ray depiction of reality by means of negatives, on which the author hand-painted signs and numbers symbolizing the character of the person depicted in the photograph. The starting point was numerology, hidden symbols that were supposed to say something about the person in question, avoiding literalness. Borys Makary leaves the viewer with numerous insinuations and freedom in deciphering the meanings of his works.
The “Connection” series is a project presenting central photographs of a woman whose subtle carnality is juxtaposed with the raw image of nature. In the photographs we can see a strong reference to the tradition of Romanticism, including the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, but at the same time its negation, since the woman photographed by Makary is naked. The central figure in the photographs is anti-romantic in a way.

As the artist says: “I am very interested in the relationship between man and nature. In this project, I show this relationship while defining the woman in a certain way”.
The “Forms” series is an interpretation and at the same time a documentation of Halina Mrożek’s works “Sculpt Couture”, where simple, ascetic aesthetics is emphasized by the geometry of forms, brought out by means of skillful light handling. These ascetic photographs are not only an interesting presentation of Mrożek’s works, but also another attempt at depicting the mysteriousness of female nature, leaving many unsaid.
